Day Camp Educator -Job Description

In this position, the educator is responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The incumbent will provide high quality educational and recreational experiences for participants that embody our core values of honesty, respect, and community.

 

Duties and responsibilities​

  • Commit to learning about the history of Granary Road Active Learning Park and Farmers Market

  • Organize and lead engaging tours of the farm for school and community groups.

  • Be responsible for the safety and whereabouts of tour participants.

  • Work in collaboration with other tour leaders

 

Prior to Camp

  • Participate actively in orientation and training.

  • Assist in whole camp planning as well as assist in writing lessons for their area of responsibility (There are 4 areas of focus: Environment Agriculture and Animals)

  • Ensure that the resources needed for your activities are ordered or arranged.

  • Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp programs.

  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas.

 

During Camp

  • Take turns being responsible for “opening and closing” camp.

  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.

  • Responsible for campers’ safety and their whereabouts always.

  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities.

  • Identify and respond to camper behaviour issues with assistance from Program Supervisor.

  • Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter on a daily and weekly basis.

  • Communicate with parents about the participants’ experiences.

  • Be a role model.

 

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Communication: Communicates in a thorough, clear, and timely manner to support information sharing.

  • Concern for Health and Safety: Acknowledges and understands how to manage children and youth engaged in activities in a safe manner to minimize risks.

  • Initiative: Knows when to do the right thing.

  • Relationship Building and Collaboration: Positively interacts with others to build enthusiasm and appreciation, and to achieve work-related goals.

 

Qualifications include:

  • Experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with young children.

  • Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.

  • Completion of a minimum of 1 year of post-secondary education in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Child Development or Concurrent Education, Environmental Studies, or related programs.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills

  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date.

  • Police Check

  • Reliable transportation as we are outside City limits with no transit access.

 

Physical Requirements - Working Conditions

  • Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, team building initiatives, physical games, and activities.

  • Able to work in an outdoor environment.

  • The ability to work with animals.

 

Contract length: 10 weeks (End of June – End of August) 

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary
